Bank of Maldives (BML) American Express debit cards will now be accepted worldwide.

The country’s national bank disclosed this via a press release on Monday, revealing that American Express debit cards were initially being launched for domestic use. However, the bank proudly noted that the cards can now be linked to USD accounts for foreign purchases online and abroad.

Foreign purchases online and abroad will come with a default daily limit of $3,000.

Acting Managing Director Aishath Noordeen revealed that the announcement underscores BML’s leadership in card issuance in the Maldives as they continue to deliver “great” benefits to their growing customer base.

Additionally, Vice President, Global Network Services, India and South Asia, American Express, Divya Jain, noted that BML was a “valued” partner for American Express in South Asia.

She went on to note that the launch of BML’s American Express debit cards for international use is a “natural” extension of their efforts to offer cardholders in the Maldives the flexibility to use their cards worldwide while meeting to their lifestyle and spending behavior.

BML revealed that existing American Express debit cardholders can request to set a USDollar account as the card’s primary account via internet or mobile banking.

Customers can also request new cards online.
