ISLAMABAD: Pakistan exported $ 50.6 million worth of goods to Japan in the first quarter of the current fiscal year 2021/22, growing 24.21% over exports from goods during the corresponding period of last year, a statement said on Thursday.

The statement from the Pakistani Embassy in Tokyo said that apart from textile items, the main exports to Japan between July and September 2021/22 included agricultural and food products.

This indicates the achievement of the export diversification strategy that the embassy has been pursuing for two years, the statement added.

This trend is expected to accelerate once the logistical limitations associated with the Covid-19 pandemic begin to resolve.

The statement also said that achieving $ 50.6 million in exports in the first quarter compared to $ 41.1 million last year, despite a large number of challenges facing international trade due to the pandemic, was mainly due to better knowledge of Pakistani products in Japan.

The awareness was created through an aggressive campaign to reach Japanese companies and supply chains; better compliance with normative requirements on the supply side; and, a growing interest based on the experience, acceptance and confidence of Japanese buyers in Pakistani products, he added.

Pakistan’s trade mission to Japan has stood out in recent years with its presence at all major trade shows in the absence of participation of exporters due to travel restrictions; present business options with Pakistan to regional chambers of commerce and trade associations; engage the public through social media and promotional activities to create a property; and encourage the Pakistani business community in Japan to engage in Pakistan-oriented trade.

Rice, sesame seeds, fish fillets, mangoes, dates and cotton threads are the main products behind this growth.

Other important exportable items, showing an increasing trend, included sporting goods, surgical instruments, animal casings, chrome ore, carpets, gloves, socks and tanned leather.

According to trade data updated by the Ministry of Commerce, Pakistan’s overall world exports showed a steadily increasing trend during the first quarter and exports to Japan follow the same trend.

To maintain this positive trade trajectory with Japan, the Pakistan Mission conducted product and sector specific promotional campaigns in collaboration with the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) through a series of webinars, tasting events and B2B virtual meetings for Pakistani exporters. .

Recent activities, held at the Pakistani Embassy in Tokyo, have focused on dates, salt, mangoes, surgical instruments, crafts and furniture.

During the second quarter, in addition to promoting a diverse range of exportable products, efforts will also be made to increase Pakistan’s service exports to Japan, mainly covering information technology and consultancy services; and the export of labor, both unskilled and skilled, for which demand is increasing in Japan.
